Linux Hosting vs. Windows Hosting

Many of my clients are initially confused about hosting environments and believe that since they are using Microsoft Windows on a PC that they must also purchase hosting on a Windows platform.

The operating system that you use on your computer should not govern your choice of a hosting platform. Most all hosting packages come with FTP access and a wide range of web page publishing options, which are the tools used for publishing pages and moving those pages from your local PC to your hosting account. Therefore, for example, if your computer runs on Microsoft® Windows®, you are not obligated to choose a Microsoft web hosting solution.

Two of the most popular hosting solutions are Linux and Windows. Both technologies are suitable for beginners, professional web developers, and everyone in between, but it is essential to choose the technology that is more suited to your style of web building. Each technology has its own distinct advantages for users.

Linux Hosting

A Linux hosting plaform is considered to be the popular operating system for web hosting servers. If you plan to incorporate work that uses PHP, Perl or MySQL, Linux is the solution you should choose. Linux is also ideal for publishing brochures, newsletters and informational web sites and sites that offer site interaction through forms, online purchasing and other e-commerce functions.

Aside from providing a Linux hosting platform for my own clients, some of my favorite places that offer Linux hosting are Dotster, and HostMonster.

Microsoft Hosting

A Microsoft hosting plaform should be your choice if you intend to build websites that use Active Server Pages, or you want to capitalize on other Microsoft applications to design your web pages. Microsoft hosting platforms also offers an advantage if you wish to intend to include searchable databases into your website. A Microsoft hosting platform delivers reduced development time and better functionality when working extensively with databases.

You can get quality Microsoft hosting from HostMonster and 1&1 (click the Microsoft tab on the hosting solutions page).

Before you signup for a hosting package, check out the web hosting coupons and promotions section on this site . There is always a good deal or two on both Linux and Microsoft hosting solutions. Be sure to use the link on the specials page to qualify for the offers.
