Web Design Glossary

Every industry has their own specific set of terms and the website design industry is no different. Many web site design terms are cryptic at best but here is list of terms and definitions that you might find helpful.

  • Link Velocity: Term to describe the rate at which links are gained or lost.
  • SEO: Search engine optimization is the practice of making changes to a website to improve relevance, popularity and rankings for specific keywords and phrases.
  • Anchor Text or Link Text: The clickable text links (anchor text) that are part of a webpage, and is usually underlined.
  • Backlink or Backward Link: Links from other sites pointing to your site that occur either naturally or through a link exchange or reciprocal linking.
  • Conversion Rate: The number of visitors who complete a planned action such as signing up for a news letter, purchasing a product, downloading a trial version of a software, etc.
  • External Link: A link that is pointing to an off site page.
  • Inbound Link or Incoming Link: A link to a particular page either from a page on the current site or a page from another site.
  • Internal Link: A link that is pointing to some other page within the same website.
  • KEI: The higher the KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index), the more popular the keywords are, and the less competition they have, which means they have a better chance of getting to the top of organic search results.
