Here is a list of frequently asked questions and answers about domain names and domain registration.
What are computer domains? All computers connected to the internet are assigned a unique IP address which looks something like this: 214.29.82.130. Since these IP addresses are extremely difficult to remember, the DNS System was established to translate domain names to these IP addresses because domain names are much easier to remember. Computer domains, then, are simply names that when registered get assigned to corresponding IP addresses.
When I register a domain name, who will have ownership of it? When you register a domain name you will have full ownership. This means that you can move your domain name somewhere else or modify it however you want.
How long does it take before my domain name is active? Once your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 12-24 hours to be active. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new site's location.
Can I transfer a domain name registered someplace else? Yes, it is possible to transfer your domain registration. We currently charge $9.95 per year for domain registration, however, I always suggest keeping domain registration separate from hosting.
Will there be any downtime in transferring my domain name registration? There is no downtime associated with transferring your domain name registration.
How long does it take for DNS to update? From the time you change the DNS on your domain name to point to our name servers it will take approximately 12-48 hours for the change to propagate through out the Internet and become active.
Can I have additional domain names point to my hosting account? Yes, you can have additional domain names point to your current account. You can use your account manager to add additional domain names and point the additional domain names to the root folder of your primary domain. Also, if your domain names are managed through Godaddy or some other domain name registrar, login to your domain manager and from the list of domains check the domain you want to forward, click the "Forward Domain" button, choose the "forward only" option. If you want the forwarded domain name to appear in the browser, choose the "forward with masking" option (not recommended for search optimization reasons).
Who is the ICANN? The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the non-profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility for the IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions.
