Frequently Asked Questions About Web Hosting

What is the difference between Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting and Shared/Virtual Hosting? Most companies offer "VIRTUAL" or "SHARED" hosting. This means you share resources with hundreds of other users in the same directory, which allows compromises to a single site and affecting performance and security of everyone on the same server. With Virtual Private Server (VPS Hosting), also known as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS Hosting) technology, a Web server is divided into multiple isolated environments, each having its own server software. Any compromise to a site would only affect that VPS and will not affect any other site on the same server.

Is there a "Control Panel" or some other utility to manage my Web site? Clients can manage and maintain all aspects of their site through a single powerful "Site Manager". It has been designed to give complete control to the site owner. Around June of 2009, we will be moving to the more popular cPanel site manager.

Can I add software to my account? With a Virtual Private Server (VPS) technology, rather than "Shared" or "Virtual" technology, you have "root-like" administrative access to your account. You essentially have complete control over all aspects of your Virtual Private Server, including the installation of software, although there a few limitations when it comes to which programs, software, and applications you can install.

What is the difference between name-based and IP based hosting? Name-based hosting is when virtual hosting sites share a single IP address. IP-based hosting accounts come with a unique IP address that is not shared with anyone else.

Can I have additional domain names point to my hosting account? Yes, you can have additional domain names point to your current account. All of our hosting plans have the ability to support multiple domains except for the Personal Basic plan. Many plans include multiple domains by default.

What are your DNS settings? In order to get your domain name pointed to your hosting account, you must set your DNS IP addresses. If you are using Godaddy to host your domain name, follow these steps:

  • Login to your domain manager and find the Domain Management page, which is a list of all of your registered domain names.
  • Click the check box beside the domain name and locate and click the "Name Servers" option (at the top of the list if you are using the Godaddy domain manager). On the Default Name Servers tab, click the "Custom" radio button, and then click the Custom Name Servers tab and enter the following: information:

    Nameserver 1: NS1.WEST-DATACENTER.NET

    Nameserver 2: NS2.WEST-DATACENTER.NET
